AD
After Christ's birth
AD is the abbreviation for Anno Domini (Latin for "in the year of our Lord"), used to date years after Christ's traditional birth: The Roman Empire fell in 476 AD.
It pairs with BC (Before Christ).
Properly, AD precedes the year (AD 1066), though it commonly follows.
In medical contexts, AD abbreviates Alzheimer's disease. (Lowercase ad is informal for advertisement.)
