Yellow vests refers to the French protest movement that began in 2018, named for the high-visibility safety vests French motorists are required to carry.
Protesters wore these vests while demonstrating against fuel taxes and economic inequality.
The term has since spread to similar populist movements elsewhere: Yellow vest protests erupted across Europe.
