woodshedding

Solitary musical drilling

Woodshedding is practicing an instrument or rehearsing material privately and intensively, especially to master difficult passages or learn new repertoire.

The term comes from jazz, evoking a musician retreating to the woodshed to practice away from others: He spent the summer woodshedding before the audition.

The implication is serious, sustained effort rather than casual playing.
