wood veneers
Thin decorative layers
Wood veneers are thin slices of wood, typically less than 3mm thick, applied to surfaces of furniture, panels, or other materials to give the appearance of solid wood at lower cost.
Veneers allow decorative grain patterns from rare or expensive woods to cover cheaper substrates: The cabinet doors were oak veneer over particleboard.
The technique also enables matching grain across large surfaces impossible with solid lumber.
