women's college
All-female higher education
A women's college is an institution of higher education that admits only female students.
These colleges emerged in the 19th century when most universities excluded women, providing rigorous academic opportunities previously unavailable to them.
Many historically women's colleges have since become coeducational, though several prestigious institutions—particularly the Seven Sisters colleges in the northeastern United States—maintain their single-sex enrollment.
She chose a women's college for its close-knit academic community.
