wishbones

Poultry snapping tradition

Wishbones are the forked bones found in birds, formed by the fusion of the two clavicles.

The name comes from a tradition: two people each grip one side of a dried wishbone and pull until it snaps, and whoever ends up with the larger piece supposedly gets their wish granted.

The term extends to anything Y-shaped: a wishbone offense in football splits receivers wide.
