wind-up clock
Key-turned time device
A wind-up clock is a mechanical timepiece powered by a coiled spring that must be periodically tightened by turning a key or knob.
Before battery-powered and electric clocks became standard, most clocks were wind-up: She forgot to wind the clock and it stopped overnight.
The term distinguishes these from automatic or electronic alternatives.
