white night

Night without darkness

A white night is a night of little or no sleep, spent awake due to worry, illness, or restlessness: I had a white night before the surgery.

The term also describes the summer phenomenon in high latitudes when twilight persists all night, the sun barely dipping below the horizon: St. Petersburg is famous for its white nights in June.
