wet counties
Liquor-legal local areas
Wet counties are U.S. counties where the sale of alcohol is legal, as opposed to dry counties where it is prohibited.
The terminology dates to Prohibition-era debates between "wets" who opposed alcohol restrictions and "drys" who supported them.
Most American counties are wet, but dry counties persist in parts of the South and Midwest.
Some counties are "moist"—allowing limited alcohol sales under specific conditions.
