package stores

Sealed bottle vendors

Package stores are retail shops licensed to sell alcoholic beverages in sealed containers for consumption elsewhere—distinguished from bars, where drinks are consumed on premises.

The term is primarily American and regional, common in the Northeast and parts of the South: The package store closes at nine.

The name derives from the requirement that purchases leave the store packaged, not open.
