western plains
Flat cattle country
The western plains are the broad, relatively flat grasslands in the western interior of North America, stretching from the Mississippi River toward the Rocky Mountains.
The term evokes cattle ranching, wheat farming, and the historical frontier: They settled on the western plains in the 1880s.
Often simply the plains when context is clear.
