waterflea

Microscopic pond dweller

A waterflea is a tiny freshwater crustacean that moves through water with jerky, hopping motions resembling a flea's jump.

The most common genus is Daphnia, widely used in aquariums as fish food and in laboratories for biological research.

Despite the name, waterfleas are not insects but distant relatives of shrimp and crabs.
