water trail

Canoe path markers

A water trail is a designated route for recreational paddling—kayaking, canoeing, or similar watercraft—along rivers, lakes, or coastal waters.

Like hiking trails on land, water trails are mapped and marked, often with launch points and rest areas identified: The Chesapeake Bay water trail stretches over 3,000 miles.

Also called a blueway or paddle trail.
