water sprout
Vigorous upright growth
A water sprout is a fast-growing vertical shoot that emerges from the trunk or branches of a tree, typically from dormant buds.
Gardeners and orchardists remove them because they divert energy from fruit production and disrupt the tree's shape: The apple tree needed pruning—water sprouts were shooting up everywhere.
Also called a sucker when growing from the roots.
