water moccasins
Swamp-dwelling pit vipers
Water moccasins are venomous pit vipers native to the southeastern United States, also called cottonmouths for the white interior of their mouths displayed as a threat.
They're the only venomous water snake in North America, found in swamps, marshes, and slow-moving streams: We spotted a water moccasin sunning on a log.
