water bug
Pond surface skimmer
Water bug refers to various aquatic insects, especially the large predatory kinds in the family Belostomatidae (giant water bugs).
In American English, water bug is also a common euphemism for a cockroach, particularly in urban areas: We found water bugs in the kitchen.
The term sounds less alarming than cockroach, though it often describes the same pest.
