water bugs
Insects on ponds
Water bugs are large aquatic insects, especially giant water bugs that can grow several inches long and deliver painful bites.
In American slang, particularly in northern cities, water bug is a euphemism for cockroach—a way of making the pest sound less disgusting: We don't have roaches, we have water bugs.
The euphemism fools no one.
