warp field
Faster-than-light enabler
A warp field is a hypothetical distortion of spacetime that would allow faster-than-light travel, most familiar from *Star Trek* where starships generate warp fields to achieve interstellar speeds.
The concept has some basis in theoretical physics—proposals like the Alcubierre drive suggest spacetime itself could be compressed ahead of a vessel and expanded behind it: The ship's warp field collapsed when they lost power.
Outside science fiction, warp field occasionally appears in discussions of speculative propulsion technology.
