vote of confidence
Formal support declaration
A vote of confidence is a formal test of support, especially for a leader or government.
In parliamentary systems, losing such a vote typically forces resignation or new elections.
The phrase extends to any expression of trust or approval: The board's renewal of his contract was a vote of confidence.
The opposite is a vote of no confidence.
