voltage-gated
Charge-controlled channel type
Voltage-gated describes ion channels in cell membranes that open or close in response to changes in electrical potential.
These channels are fundamental to nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction: voltage-gated sodium channels, voltage-gated calcium channels.
When membrane voltage reaches a threshold, the channel's structure shifts, allowing specific ions to flow through.
