volatile substance
Readily becomes vapor
A volatile substance is one that evaporates readily at normal temperatures, releasing vapors into the air.
The term appears most often in contexts of safety warnings, chemistry, and substance abuse—where inhaling fumes from glues, solvents, or fuels produces intoxication: Volatile substance abuse among teenagers remains a concern.
Gasoline, acetone, and alcohol are common examples.
