unpackaging

Opening the box

Unpackaging is the act of removing something from its packaging.

The word appears in both literal contexts—unpackaging a new phone—and figurative ones, where it means to examine or break down something complex: unpackaging the assumptions behind the policy.

The simpler unpacking serves the same purposes and is far more common.
