boxcutter

Retracts into handle

A boxcutter is a small handheld tool with a retractable razor blade, used to open cardboard boxes and cut packaging materials.

The blade slides out from a handle and can be retracted for safety.

Also called a utility knife or Stanley knife (British).

Since September 11, 2001, boxcutters have been prohibited on commercial aircraft—the hijackers used them as weapons.
