underwater city
Drowned urban settlement
An underwater city is a settlement built beneath the surface of a body of water.
The concept appears frequently in science fiction and mythology—Atlantis being the most famous example.
Real underwater habitats exist as small research stations, but full cities remain speculative: The novel imagined an underwater city powered by geothermal vents.
The phrase also describes cities flooded by rising seas or reservoirs: The underwater city emerged when the lake level dropped.
