underwater canyon
Deep ocean valley
An underwater canyon is a steep-sided valley cut into the ocean floor, typically extending from the continental shelf down the slope toward the deep sea.
Many form where rivers once flowed during periods of lower sea level; others are carved by underwater currents carrying sediment.
The submarine explored the underwater canyon off the coast of California.
