underpadding
Beneath the carpet
Underpadding is cushioning material placed beneath a carpet or rug to provide softness, insulation, and extended wear.
Also called carpet pad or cushion.
The thickness and density affect how the floor feels underfoot: The installer recommended eight-pound underpadding for high-traffic areas.
