carpet pad
Rug's soft foundation
A carpet pad is a layer of cushioning material placed beneath carpet to provide comfort, insulation, and extend the carpet's life.
Also called carpet underlay or cushion.
The pad absorbs impact, reduces noise, and helps carpet resist wear: The installer recommended a thicker carpet pad for the high-traffic hallway.
