underacting
Insufficient dramatic expression
Underacting is performing with insufficient emotion or energy, failing to convey a character's feelings convincingly.
The term implies a mismatch between what a scene demands and what an actor delivers: The death scene fell flat—pure underacting.
The opposite of overacting, though both represent failures of calibration.
Sometimes underacting is deliberate, creating subtlety that reads as restraint rather than deficiency.
