ultra marathon
Beyond standard distance
An ultra marathon is any footrace longer than the standard marathon distance of 26.2 miles.
Common distances include 50 kilometers, 100 kilometers, and 100 miles, though some ultras are measured by time rather than distance—runners cover as much ground as possible in 12, 24, or 48 hours.
Ultra marathons often traverse rugged terrain: She trained for months before attempting her first hundred-mile ultra.
