typewriter ribbon
Inked fabric strip
A typewriter ribbon is a spool of inked fabric or plastic film that transfers ink to paper when struck by a typewriter's keys.
The ribbon advances incrementally with each keystroke, distributing wear across its length.
Most ribbons were black, though two-color ribbons (black and red) allowed switching between inks.
Now obsolete along with the machines they served.
