two by four

Standard framing board

A two by four is a piece of lumber nominally measuring two inches by four inches in cross-section, though actual dimensions are smaller due to milling.

It's the most common framing material in residential construction: The wall was framed with two by fours.

The term sometimes describes anything long and flat used as a weapon or tool: He swung the two by four like a bat.
