afterburning

Jet fuel injection

Afterburning is the process of injecting additional fuel into a jet engine's exhaust to produce extra thrust.

The fuel ignites in the hot exhaust gases, dramatically increasing power for takeoff, climbing, or supersonic flight at the cost of high fuel consumption.

An aircraft using this feature is said to be flying on afterburner.

The device itself is called an afterburner.
