tuberculin

TB screening substance

Tuberculin is a protein extract derived from the bacterium that causes tuberculosis, used in diagnostic skin tests.

A small amount injected under the skin produces a reaction in people who have been exposed to TB: The nurse measured the tuberculin test site after 48 hours.

The test indicates exposure, not necessarily active disease.
