tropane alkaloids
Nightshade plant toxins
Tropane alkaloids are a class of naturally occurring compounds found in plants of the nightshade family, including belladonna, jimsonweed, and coca.
They share a distinctive bicyclic chemical structure and typically affect the nervous system.
The most familiar examples are atropine, scopolamine, and cocaine.
Many have medicinal uses—atropine dilates pupils and treats certain poisonings, scopolamine prevents motion sickness—but in larger doses they can cause hallucinations, delirium, or death.
