trinitrotoluene

Dynamite's chemical cousin

Trinitrotoluene is a yellow crystalline compound used as a high explosive, better known by its abbreviation TNT.

It became the standard military explosive in the twentieth century because it's relatively stable—it won't detonate from impact or friction, only from a detonator.

TNT equivalent is the standard measure for comparing explosive yields: The bomb had a yield of fifteen kilotons of TNT.
