trading in
Exchanging for upgrade
Trading in is exchanging something you own as partial payment toward a new purchase, typically a vehicle: I'm thinking of trading in my old car for a hybrid.
The trade-in value is what the dealer credits you.
The practice extends to other goods—electronics, equipment, even houses—wherever sellers accept used items against new ones.
