town meetings
Local civic forums
Town meetings are gatherings where residents of a municipality assemble to discuss and vote on local matters—budgets, ordinances, land use.
The practice originated in New England and remains a form of direct democracy in smaller communities there.
More broadly, town meeting describes any public forum where officials hear from constituents: The senator held a town meeting to address concerns about healthcare.
