town marshal
Small-town peace officer
A town marshal is a law enforcement officer appointed or elected to maintain order in a small municipality, particularly in the American West during the 19th century.
The role typically combined duties of police chief and court officer in towns too small for a full police department.
Wyatt Earp served as town marshal in several frontier towns.
Some small towns still use the title today.
