tin star

Lawman's chest piece

A tin star is a badge worn by a sheriff or other lawman, typically star-shaped and made of cheap metal.

The term often carries a dismissive or contemptuous tone, suggesting the wearer's authority is questionable or unearned: Some tin star from a nowhere town thinks he can tell me what to do.

By extension, tin star can refer to the lawman himself, usually disparagingly.
