town gates
Walled settlement access
Town gates are the entrances through a town's defensive walls, where roads pass into the enclosed settlement.
Historically, gates were secured at night and controlled access for trade and defense.
Many European cities preserve their medieval gates as landmarks, and the word *gate* in street names often marks where they once stood: We entered through the old town gate.
