toreador

Arena cape wielder

A toreador is a bullfighter, particularly one who fights on horseback or plays a prominent role in the spectacle.

The word comes from Spanish and appears frequently in opera, literature, and figurative use: He entered the boardroom with the swagger of a toreador.

In technical bullfighting terminology, matador is more precise for the principal fighter who kills the bull, but toreador remains common in English for any bullfighter.
