title roles

Characters naming films

A title role is a character whose name appears in the title of a work—Hamlet in *Hamlet*, Anna Karenina in *Anna Karenina*, Macbeth in *Macbeth*.

The term applies mainly to plays, operas, films, and novels: She played the title role in Carmen.

Not every lead is a title role; the protagonist of *Death of a Salesman* is the lead but not the title role, since no character is named "Death of a Salesman."
