time penalty
Seconds added punitively
A time penalty is an addition to a competitor's elapsed time as punishment for a rule violation or error.
In motorsports, drivers receive time penalties for causing collisions or cutting corners.
In skiing, missed gates add seconds.
The penalty may be applied during competition or calculated afterward: He finished first but dropped to third after the time penalty.
