time fuse
Clockwork explosion trigger
A time fuse is a fuse designed to detonate an explosive after a predetermined interval rather than on impact.
The delay allows for tactical timing—shells can be set to burst above enemy positions, or demolition charges can give the person setting them time to reach safety.
The artillery rounds were fitted with time fuses set for airburst.
