Negative hand signal
Thumbs-down is a gesture of rejection or disapproval—the thumb pointed downward.
It extends to any negative verdict or denial of approval: The proposal got a thumbs-down from management.
The opposite is thumbs-up.
Both gestures are popularly associated with Roman gladiatorial combat, though the historical accuracy is disputed.
