throes

Intense struggle pangs

Throes are intense spasms of pain or struggle, usually in the plural: the throes of childbirth, death throes.

The word almost always appears in the phrase in the throes of, describing someone caught up in a powerful, often overwhelming experience: in the throes of passion, in the throes of a financial crisis.

The singular throe is rare outside poetry.
