threshing-floor
Harvest beating ground
A threshing-floor is a hard, flat surface, traditionally outdoors, where harvested grain is separated from its stalks and husks.
Farmers would beat or tread the grain on this prepared ground, then toss it in the air so the wind could carry away the lighter chaff while the heavier kernels fell back to the floor.
The term appears frequently in biblical and historical texts, where threshing-floors often served as important gathering places for agricultural communities.
