thole

Gunwale oar pin

Thole is a pin set in the gunwale of a boat to serve as a fulcrum for an oar—what's more commonly called a thole pin or oarlock.

Separately, thole is an archaic or dialectal verb meaning to endure or suffer: She tholed the cold winter without complaint.

This second sense survives mainly in Scottish and Northern English dialects.
