territory marking
Urinating on borders
Territory marking is behavior in which an animal deposits scent, urine, or other signals to establish boundaries and claim an area as its own.
Dogs mark fire hydrants, cats spray furniture, wolves define pack ranges.
The concept extends to human behavior—leaving personal items to claim a seat, or establishing dominance in shared spaces: He's just territory marking with all those family photos on his desk.
