teleoperation

Controlling machines remotely

Teleoperation is controlling a machine or robot from a distance, typically through a remote interface.

The operator receives sensory feedback—video, audio, or haptic signals—while issuing commands to the remote system: Surgeons use teleoperation to perform procedures on patients hundreds of miles away.

The technology appears in bomb disposal, deep-sea exploration, and space missions where direct human presence is impossible or dangerous.
